What was initially a routine car stop by police officers in Brooklyn turned into a shooting Thursday night.
A group of NYPD officers noticed an unoccupied vehicle with an out of state registration just before 9 p.m. on East 39th Street and Avenue J. Police say they then learned the car was in fact reported stolen.
Police say a 20-year-old man approached the stolen vehicle when a second vehicle drove recklessly around the group of officers nearly striking them. One officer fired one shot at the second vehicle. The person behind the wheel of that car took off and then crashed into a nearby parked car.
Two people then exited that car and attempted to run off. Police say that a 23-year-old man was taken into custody, but that the driver of the second vehicle is still being sought. As for the 20-year-old male suspect who approached officers during their initial car stop, authorities say that he was taken into custody at the scene too.
Nobody was injured at the scene. Officers who tended to the scene were taken to the hospital to be treated for tinnitus.
The investigation is still on going at this point and no charges have yet been made.
