An
online candle company is selling a line of candles representing odors characteristic of the 50 states in the U.S.
New Jersey's candle has hints of ocean salt, cranberries and vanilla. But this did not stop the people of the internet from making jokes at New Jersey’s expense that the candle would smell like oil refineries and garbage dumps.
The jokes are not without merit. Parts of New Jersey do have some offensive odors. Mostly because there are so many industries operating in the state. New Jersey could have 50 candles with different smells all on its own.
News 12 New Jersey’s Brian Donohue went on a search for the worst smell in the state and ended up down on Wilson Avenue in Newark, where it dead ends at the Newark Bay.
This is the location with one of the United States’ largest sewage treatment plants, where the flushes from 1.5 million toilets get processed. Across the street is a rendering plant that recycles waste fat, meat and bones. The plant turns the waste into ingredients for products such as fertilizer and soap tallow.
Donohue says that the smell coming from this area is almost unbearable.
