Activists marched in Newark on Tuesday on the 55th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. The march focused on police brutality as participants gathered at King's statue in front of the MLK justice building. Many said his struggle for civil rights continues.
Activists are calling on New Jersey lawmakers to pass laws that allow towns to form civilian review boards with subpoena power.
"For change for police restructuring and reform, the momentum has diminished. The need is even greater today than it was in 2020 when George Floyd was killed," said Larry Hamm, the chairman of People’s Organization for Progress (POP).
Hamm says the attorney general's takeover over the Paterson Police Department is a positive step but says the federal government still needs to investigate the recent police killing of Najee Seabrooks.
