In two weeks, some of the 16 dogs abandoned in a home in Newark could be up for adoption. The animals were discovered on Wednesday and are now being cared for by the Animal Humane Society of Tinton Falls.

News 12 New Jersey was given a look at four of the 16 dogs that were rescued. The dogs looked happy and seeking the attention of a loving owner. How they currently look is drastically different from when they were found, with matted hair and covered in urine and feces.

It’s believed they were left by their owner a month ago.

"The neighborhood had kind of pitched in to do what they could to take care of them but obviously their needs far surpassed anything a good Samaritan neighbor could do," said Olivia Gonzalez, with the Animal Humane Society.

Once rescued, a number of groomers and veterinary clinics around New Jersey offered their time and removed that matted hair.

“Our team is going to do a full medical veterinary assessment of every animal,ch was very difficult to do while they were sporting those pelts. Because there could be hidden masses or injuries," said Gonzalez.

The dogs will next be vaccinated, spayed and neutered and then offered up for adoption.
