The city of Newark honored one of its most dedicated workers Wednesday – a mailman who been on the job for 50 years.
Jerome Alexander began his career as a letter carrier in 1969 after some encouragement from friends. He previously served in the army. Alexander says that he does not plan to retire anytime soon.
“They ask me, ‘When are you going to retire?’ And every time I say I’m going to retire...in another six months. But now since you all inspired me, I’m going work another 50 years,” he says.
Alexander’s friends and coworkers presented him with some gifts and a pin for reaching the milestone.
He says that he has been able to work so long thanks to support from his wife, children and coworkers.
