There soon will be more riverfront property to enjoy in Newark. Right along the Passaic River, a new outdoor space is opening. A ribbon-cutting event was held on Friday.
The project is Phase C of Newark Riverfront Park.
"We are happy to have something like this in Newark, so you don't have to go to Hoboken to hang out at the riverfront…you don't have to go to Weehawken to hang out at the riverfront, you can do it in your own backyard,” said Mayor Ras J. Baraka.
The first phase of the project was completed in 2013. So far, it offers space for workout classes, festivals, and water activities.
"There's yoga here, there's Zumba here, there's hip-hop events here, there's club events here," said Baraka.
Called "the notch" the area will have a riverfront walkway with accessibility features, an amphitheater, an art wall and three kiosk spaces for a variety of uses.
"This will add to that enjoyment of our family hanging out down here, enjoying ourselves walking along the river walk,” said Councilman C. Lawrence Crump.
When finished, this portion will run from Dock Railroad Bridge to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
"It is a good day in Newark, there's a lot more work to be done but I’m happy we finished this part,” said Baraka.
This section is not open to the public yet. When the park is complete it’ll run from the Ironbound Riverfront to the North Ward.
