New Jersey is joining 22 other states in the fight for rights for the transgender community.
State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal says that schools cannot be allowed to deny students access to bathrooms that are consisted with their gender identity.
This comes amid a lawsuit filed after a Virginia school refused to let a transgender student use the boy’s bathroom, even though he identified as a male.
“In New Jersey and across this country, individuals deserve the right to be treated in line with their gender identity and to live free of transphobia,” Grewal said in a statement.
New Jersey is one of 20 states that have enacted protections against this kind of discrimination.
Grewal also recently issued new directives to law enforcement officers to help make police interactions with the transgender community safer.
