A multi-alarm fire in Jersey City displaced two families and sent six firefighters and a civilian to the hospital Friday, according to fire officials.
Jersey City Fire Department Chief Jack Johnson said the extreme heat and humidity made conditions challenging for crews.
Firefighters became exhausted after about 30 minutes of battling the flames, which prompted officials to escalate the response to a fifth alarm to provide relief for firefighters.
Six firefighters were treated at a local hospital for breathing difficulties. A few also experienced chest pains. Officials said all are expected to be OK.
One civilian also went to the hospital with breathing problems after escaping the building on their own.
The fire impacted two buildings that housed two families and left 14 adults and one child displaced.
The buildings were deemed uninhabitable. Impacted residents will need to be relocated.
Investigators believe the fire started in a ground-floor garage, but a cause of the fire was not immediately known as of Friday night.
There were no fatalities.
Approximately 80 firefighters from the Jersey City Fire Department, with assistance from Bayonne firefighters, responded to the scene.
