Police in Hillsdale are asking residents to stay indoors after a black bear was spotted on the west side of town.

According to a notice posted on the Hillsdale Police Department's Facebook page, the bear was last seen in the area of Ann Blanche Smith School on Hillsdale Avenue. The school is in a primarily residential area with wooded areas nearby.

Police said Sunday night that animal control officers were notified and are responding to the area.

"Residents in the area are advised to remain indoors if possible and do not approach or attempt to follow the bear," police said on social media.

Officials are also urging people living in the area to keep pets and children inside.

According to the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, black bears are the largest land mammal in New Jersey and are not true hibernators, so they may remain active throughout the year.

Wildlife officials say black bears are attracted by odors from food sources created by people. Officials suggest taking steps to avoid attracting bears, such as securing trash cans, keeping outdoor grills clean to avoid food odors, and keeping windows closed while cooking.
