A Mullica Township homeowner is receiving post-rabies exposure treatment after being attacked by a groundhog, according to the Atlantic County Division of Public Health.
The attack occurred on July 27 near the 1300 block of Weekstown Road. Health officials say they collected the animal and brought it to a state lab, where the rabies diagnosis was confirmed days later.
The investigation determined that two outdoor cats were also exposed. Both have been placed under a four-month observation confinement period.
This is the second case of rabies recorded in Atlantic County this year. The first involved a raccoon found in Mullica in late January.
Officials warn that rabies can be fatal if left untreated. The disease is transmitted through direct contact with saliva through broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose or mouth.
The Atlantic County Division of Public Health reminds locals to ensure their pets are up to date with vaccinations. They also recommend ensuring trash cans have secure lids to prevent animals from foraging.
Residents are urged to call animal control if they see nocturnal animals like skunks or raccoons during daylight hours.
Anyone bitten by a rabid animal must wash the wound immediately with soap and water and seek medical treatment.
