Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Paterson native and comedy icon Floyd Vivino’s “Uncle Floyd Show” entertained New Jersey and New York television audiences.
The show was a low budget mix of vaudeville comedy, old-time piano tunes and bands like The Ramones and Cindy Lauper. And now “Uncle Floyd” is making his performances available online.
Vivino says that the decision came because the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of his regular night club performances. But he says that his fans are really enjoying the new format online.
“That’s where the audiences are,” he says.
Every Wednesday Vivino performs on the internet platform Stageit. Every Thursday, fans can pay $10 to watch lost episodes of the “Uncle Floyd Show” on Zoom. They can also ask Vivino whatever questions they may have afterward.
“An entertainer's biggest fear is to outlive their audience. And that happens to a lot of entertainers. In other words, the public gets very tired of you,” Vivino says. “But I was very touched to see people and we take these Q&As and they say, ‘I remember you from 40 years ago.” Just nice stories people share with me.”
Of the more than 6,000 episodes of the “Uncle Floyd Show” that aired on VHF, local cable, public television and briefly on NBC – only a few dozen still exist. The Thursday night Zoom shows feature lost episodes that no one has seen for decades. With a limit of 100 people, they sold out quickly.
“I found a ton of shows in a corner. I’m cleaning out the warehouse, my props, pianos, scenery, crates of puppets. I know it sounds like a corny story,” Vivino says.
Information on all of Vivino's appearances, virtual and otherwise, can be found at UncleFloyd.net.
