The revenue numbers are in - and it's a new record at the Jersey Shore.
Monmouth County beaches raked in $32 million this summer in beach sales - from the sand to the shops.
Despite a slow beginning, the crowds turned out this summer in record numbers.
Towns like Bradley Beach, Manasquan and Spring Lake all saw increases in badge sales.
“Lots of foot traffic. Lots of visitors from around all over. It's been a wonderful summer. I'm very grateful,” said Barb Benanti, owner of Jean Louise Home Made Candies in Spring Lake.
“When you have revenue to those numbers, you also have jobs to those numbers that go with it. That's extremely important,” said Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone.
Spring Lake’s downtown is just a short walk from the boards and businesses there felt the mid-summer rush.
“About the middle of July through the end of summer, it was a lot better than we had forecasted. And people were coming off the beach, and they were using the towns, food and shops,” said Brian Smith, co-owner of Bare Wires Surf Shop.
“We were so busy. We actually had to bring in more employees. We had a lot of high school girls which we haven't seen in the past coming in and helping us,” added Benanti.
According to state law, revenue from beach badge sales can only be used for beach maintenance and operations.
