A woman and two children were hospitalized after they were struck by an 18-wheeler while crossing a street in Jersey City on Tuesday morning, city officials said.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:43 a.m. near the intersection of Ocean and Wilkinson avenues.

According to city officials, the tractor-trailer was stopped mid-block when a woman and two children attempted to cross the street in front of the vehicle. Officials said the traffic signal changed and the three pedestrians were struck.

A crossing guard was stationed at the intersection and was actively assisting pedestrians at the time of the incident, officials said.

The woman and two children were transported to a hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately released.

"This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and my thoughts are with the family and everyone impacted by this incident. As a father, I am heartbroken," Mayor James Solomon said in a statement. "At this time, the incident is under investigation by the JCPD, and officials will provide more details after completion of the investigation."
