Seven people were shot and injured by gunfire in the South Ward in Trenton last night.
Among the injured were two 17-year-olds, a male and a female.
Trenton police have yet to make any arrests, adding that investigators are looking for multiple gunmen.
The shooting took place at Furman Street and Centre Street on Tuesday night.
Police Director Steve Wilson says 50 shots were fired, leaving behind shattered glass in car windows and bullet holes in the side of parked cars.
The Trenton police director says that the area of the city already receives extra police patrols and intervention from community street teams. Wilson says the gun violence comes at a time when overall crime in the city is down by 20%. Homicides are down by 57% compared with this time last year.
As for the investigation, Wilson says police are still trying to figure out what sparked the shooting.
"The motive is unclear at this time, and the investigation is still in its infancy. So, it hasn't been determined yet if this was a shootout or just a shooting," Wilson said.
Due to the shooting, the mayor of Trenton says he'd like to see a change in the summer curfew that takes effect at midnight on July 1.
Mayor Reed Gusciora says he'd like to see the curfew start earlier. Some suggest 10 p.m.
“During the summer hours, it’s been extended to midnight. I think that we have to revisit that. Particularly when we see what’s happening across the country in other urban areas," said Gusciora.
Police would not say that this was related to gang violence.
The police director says this area of the South Ward is known for quality-of-life issues, including drug sales, drug use and gambling.
