Middletown officials tabled plans to redistrict the town’s schools after a large outcry from the public at a town meeting Monday night.
The school board voted unanimously to kill the plan after hearing nearly three hours of public comment that was mostly against moving the students.
The plan was originally proposed to address overcrowding in the schools. Officials began with a 40-minute presentation laying out the details of the redistricting. The district conducted a study that found that some schools in the town are overcrowded, while some are under capacity. More than 500 students would have been impacted.
However, parents and students told the board that they did not want the schools split up in the middle of their academic careers.
School officials said the board may revisit the redistricting debate in the future, but that the plan is dead for now.
