A woman from Middlesex County is sharing her breast cancer story this October with the hope of encouraging women to get checked sooner.
Allison Boyanovski says for her, it wasn't in her genetics and was the last thing she expected as a brand new mom.
Boyanovski is on her way to celebrating a birthday milestone next June, but the day before marks an even more significant milestone.
"Every year we get to celebrate another birthday, another year in remission on the same day basically, so that's great,” says Boyanovski.
Today, Allison is cancer free, but nearly five years ago, that wasn't the case.
"I was just getting dressed and felt something on my breast,” says Boyanovski. “I was only 34 at the time so the thought of something being wrong was not part of my plan."
Diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, the mom of then 9-month old Keira fought the battle of her life, undergoing chemo, radiation and a bilateral mastectomy.
Her message this October is to encourage women to go get checked, no matter the circumstances.
Boyanovski says she will hit her five-year mark in remission in June of next year, the day before her 40th birthday.
