Mayor Andre Sayegh says an SUV plowed into a Paterson bagel shop, sending three people to the hospital, including the driver.
The crash happened around noon Wednesday at Tony’s Bagels on McLean Boulevard.
Officials say an older woman hit the gas when she meant to hit the brake, causing the vehicle to crash into the front of the shop.
A shop employee and a customer were also taken to the hospital to be checked out but were not seriously injured.
Officials say that the building is structurally sound but is looking at tens of thousands of dollars' worth of repairs.
The bagel shop is a fixture in the community. Sayegh says that it is a busy area and a popular spot.
“I’m a customer and my wife does come here often. She walks with my children. I’m concerned for the people that were inside,” the mayor says.
The owner of the shop tells News 12 New Jersey that one of his workers usually takes a break around the time of the crash and usually sits right where the crash happened. That worker took his break a half-hour early on this day.
Tony’s Bagels plans to be open on Thursday.
