For this week's Toll of Commuting, News 12 New Jersey compared three popular ways to travel from Hoboken Terminal to Exchange Place in Jersey City: The PATH train, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and biking.
The PATH train remains one of the most popular choices for commuters. The trip took about 10 minutes and cost $3.25 one way. It's fast and affordable, but rush-hour riders may have to deal with crowded train cars.
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail offered another budget-friendly option. The ride took about nine minutes and cost $2.65 one way. While it makes more stops than the PATH, it is often less crowded.
For commuters looking for more flexibility, biking is another alternative. A classic Citi Bike costs $4.99 for up to 30 minutes, and the ride takes about 16 minutes, according to Apple Maps. Riders can avoid waiting for trains and set their own pace, though weather and the physical effort required can make the trip more challenging.
While they weren't part of News 12's comparison, buses and driving remain additional commuting options for travelers making the trip between Hoboken and Jersey City. The bus can be a good alternative for those who don't mind a longer ride, while driving offers flexibility but often comes with higher costs, including parking, tolls and traffic.
Ultimately, there's no one-size-fits-all commute. The best option depends on whether saving time, cutting costs, avoiding crowds or having more flexibility matters most.
