Lakewood Township Mayor Raymond Coles says at least 20 police officers are self-quarantining after being exposed to someone who tested positive for coronavirus.
Mayor Coles says they came into contact with the person during the funeral last Friday for fellow officer Nicklas Shimonovich, 23, who was killed in an off-duty motorcycle crash.
Lakewood Police Spokesperson Greg Staffordsmith tells News 12 in addition to having disposable masks available and instructing those in attendance to maintain social distancing, the Lakewood Police Department is actively finding out how many officers had contact with the infected person.
None of the quarantined officers have tested positive. They will be monitored closely over the next few days for signs of illness.
Lakewood police is reminding anyone who was in attendance to self-monitor, and encourage those who may be exhibiting signs or symptoms to immediately seek medical attention and get testing.
