A massive fire has destroyed the nearly 120-year-old Paterson Armory on Market Street in Paterson.
The fire broke out at around 11 p.m. Monday in the basement of the armory. Six nearby Paterson schools had to be closed Tuesday due to the response around the fire.
When fire crews arrived Monday night, they attempted to fight the flames inside the armory. However, the flames had grown so intense that parts of the building began to collapse and firefighters were told to evacuate. The fire eventually broke though the floors and made its way all the way up to the roof.
Witnesses reported seeing green flames coming from the building Tuesday morning. Fire officials believe this is from the copper materials inside the armory.
There are reports that one firefighter injured his back while fighting the blaze. No residents were hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The armory was built in 1896 and was used during the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. Afterward, it became a venue to hold such events as circuses and basketball games. It was closed and has been vacant since 1990.
Paterson officials say the city is now accepting bids to demolish the building. It will have to be imploded so that the demolition won't damage nearby homes and buildings. Officials also say that demolition crews will have to be careful because of the asbestos inside.
