A Marine Corps veteran from New Jersey died in Ukraine while trying to rescue civilians in war-ravaged Bakhmut, according to humanitarian groups.
Pete Reed, 33, was from Bordentown and was working with
Global Outreach Doctors. The group says a missile hit his evacuation truck.
Reed founded Global Response Medicine after serving in Iraq to help those displaced by war. Both humanitarian groups confirmed his death.
"Pete will be remembered for the depth of his courage and his compassion, his selflessness, and his sacrifice,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement. “His death serves as a devastating reminder of the catastrophic suffering that this unjustified war has caused.”
