Members of the Christian faith in Newark came together Friday for a “living” Stations of the Cross event.
The ceremony commemorates the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Organizers said that this year’s Good Friday event was also a justice walk for immigrants.
“It is a call to the society. Why we are walking on the streets is to tell the people we need to come together for more justice as we follow the steps of Christ,” said the Rev. Karl Esker of St. James Church.
The event began Friday morning at the Federal Immigration Building and moved to various spots throughout the city, including City Hall. The walk ended with a final stop outside the Cathedral Basilica on Sixth Avenue.
