A large group of people gathered inside a Burlington County neighborhood on Monday to protest a white man accused of harassing his Black neighbors.
Dozens of people gathered on the 3800 block of Gramercy Way in Mount Laurel outside the home of 45-year-old Edward Cagney Mathews, who is accused of using various racial slurs against his Black neighbors.
A video of Mathews was posted on social media of an incident that happened on July 2. Mathews and a Black man are seen in a verbal confrontation in which Mathews appears to use several racial slurs. The neighbors allege that Mathews has continuously harassed them.
When the video of the incident went viral on Monday, a large group gathered outside of Mathews’s home. The group chanted “Black Lives Matter” and held various protest signs.
Police officers were stationed outside of Mathews’s home for protection, but say that the protest remained peaceful for most of the day. But several officers were maced and bottles were thrown at them in
the process of them taking Mathews into custody and driving out of the complex.
No other injuries were reported, but authorities say that some of the homes were damaged during the gathering.
Mount Laurel police closed several roads in the area as a precaution and urged residents to stay away from the area.
Mount Laurel Mayor Stephen Steglik and the Township Council
issued a statement following the incident, which reads, “To say that we are appalled by disturbing and vicious act of hate which was caught on camera would be an understatement. This man’s actions do not reflect who we are as a community, nor our values. Nobody should be made to feel unsafe or unwelcome in their own neighborhood, let alone their hometown.”
Mathews was charged with harassment and biased intimidation.
