A jury completed its first full day of deliberations in the murder trial of Dmitriy Popov, the man accused of fatally stabbing O'Shae Sibley outside a Midwood gas station in 2023.

Jurors sent two notes to the judge in the morning, asking for the legal definitions for the charges in the case.

Before lunch, the judge re-read the definitions for all nine counts against Popov, including second-degree murder as a hate crime and manslaughter as a hate crime.

Popov, who was 17 at the time of the stabbing and is now 20, appeared in court handcuffed and wearing a white button-down shirt. Family members sat behind him in the courtroom.

Sibley's family and friends were also present as they awaited a verdict.

It’s been three years since the deadly confrontation in July 2023. Prosecutors say Sibley and a group of friends were dancing after returning from the beach when Popov and his friends began shouting homophobic and racist slurs.

Popov ended up fatally stabbing Sibley in the chest with a knife.

Defense attorneys argue that Popov acted in self-defense.

Deliberations are scheduled to resume on Thursday.
