A sick groundhog found in Middletown has tested positive for rabies.

The animal was found near the intersection of Raritan Avenue and Erie Road on June 5. According to Middletown Township Animal Control, the groundhog was captured and sent for testing, and the NJ Department of Health confirmed it was rabid.

Animal control officials say residents should never interact with wildlife “under any circumstances.”

“If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and avoid all contact,” officials said in a statement.

Animal control and health officials recommend that all domestic pets, such as dogs and cats, be vaccinated against rabies. Owners should also avoid allowing pets to run off-leash, especially in wooded areas, to prevent contact with wild animals that might be rabid.
