Thursday was the sixth day of the murder trial of Rashid Bynum – the man accused of fatally shooting Sayreville Council Member Eunice Dwumfour multiple times outside her home.
Jurors had a chance to hear from a friend of the victim. Osi King is the leader of the Champions Royal Assembly church.
It was King who told jurors while on the stand that Dwumfour and Bynum had known each other as members of his church.
King testified that at one time, he took in Dwumfour as a roommate.
While the relationship was purely professional, he said her father called twice, angry with him. But King wasn’t willing to give details about any bad blood between the two men while on the stand.
Defense Attorney Michael Ashley asked King about learning that Bynum was charged. King said he was in disbelief.
“At the time the incident happened we had not seen Rashid in approximately six years. And so to just mention his name that he was the accused, I said, ‘No, Rashid?’” King testified. “I said there’s no reason for Rashid to do this. Why would he want to do that? What did Eunice do?”
King also confirmed that Bynum had also lived within his home as a guest but was told to leave at some point, but did not elaborate further.
During the morning, jurors heard from the owner of A-1 Express Car Rental in Hampton, Virginia.
Keisha Gray testified that she rented a white Hyundai Elantra to Bynum on Jan. 31, 2023. That was one day before Dwumfour was murdered.
Jurors saw the contract Bynum initialed and his photo.
While on the stand, Gray said of Bynum, “He just said he had to run up north real quick, to be specific.”
Investigators have said Byum used that car to drive to Sayreville from Virginia, where he allegedly waited outside Dwumfour’s house before shooting at her 15 times from close range.
Jurors also saw the Glock 19 used in the shooting of Dwumfor, which police say was found hidden in the bedroom of Bynum’s girlfriend in Virginia.
Jurors also saw photos of the crime scene, including Dwumfour slumped over in her car after being shot.
The trial continues on Friday.
