Jersey Proud: Transport entrepreneur Malcom McLean

Malcolm Maclean was a transport entrepreneur who developed the modern intermodal shipping container. He found it was cheaper to ship his trucks to Texas than to drive them there.
On this day, April 26, 1956, the first ship with these containers left the Port of Newark – a new way to ship items.
Today the Port of Newark and Elizabeth employs 13,000 people and is the third-largest port in the country.
