It was exactly 129 years ago that the second boxing match ever to be filmed was recorded in New Jersey.
Sept. 7, 1894 – The fight between heavyweight champion James Corbett and Peter Courtney.
It was all thanks to Thomas Edison and his Black Maria Studio in West Orange. The fight was made for television – long before television existed.
The fight was staged so that it could be filmed in the studio. There are six one-minute rounds. Only footage from one round remains today.
Corbett won the fight.
