The mayor of Jersey City was found guilty Friday of obstructing justice and resisting arrest.
Mayor Jeremiah Healy's conviction stems from an encounter he had with police last year after trying to intervene in an argument outside his sister's Bradley Beach bar. The municipal court judge in the case said the family and friends who testified on behalf of Healy were not credible.
In addition, Healy testified that he was not drunk and disorderly the night of the incident. He claimed while he tried to help a couple involved in the argument, he was thrown to the ground and pepper-sprayed by police. However, the arresting officers testified that Healy refused to move on and interfered with them while they were doing their job.
Healy was fined $256, but said he has no intention of paying up. He also said he is not going to step down as mayor and plans to appeal the case.
