Nearly 300 people showed up in Red Bank Saturday dressed as the movie characters Jay and Silent Bob, breaking a world record.
The event was to celebrate famed director and New Jersey native Kevin Smith’s 47th birthday, as well as the 20th anniversary of his Red Bank comic book store Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.
Smith, who plays Silent Bob, and Jason Mewes, who plays Jay, were on hand for the celebration. The characters were first introduced in Smith’s iconic film “Clerks” and have gone on to appear in other movies by Smith.
The Guinness Book of World Records says that 250 people were needed to break the record – 284 showed up.
Smith said in an Instagram post that he always dreamed of being in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Red Bank Mayor Pasquale Menna gave Smith the key to the city.
