The NYPD says major crime decreased, but transit crime increased 18.5% in February.
News 12 previously reported that a man was slashed and robbed on a train in Gravesend in February.
Commuter Christina Sanabria rides at the Gravesend station and says the statistics hit home.
“It’s pretty scary to go to work and home. I go home late so I always keep a lookout," says Sanabria.
“It happens all the time so it’s kinda common," said Sanabria.
The NYPD says the increase coincided with record-breaking cold temperatures and snow, causing ridership patterns to shift, and the department paused ejections from the transit system for violations of the rules during the extreme weather. February saw a 61% decrease in ejections compared to January.
The NYPD says it's adding about 140 additional police officers to the transit systems across the city in the wake of the uptick.
