Despite the rainy and cold conditions, the unofficial start of summer is underway across New Jersey.

Most people traveling this holiday weekend are expected to drive, even as gas prices remain near record highs.

The average cost for a gallon of regular in New Jersey is $4.53, about $1.50 higher than this time last year.

AAA projects a record 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 21 and May 25.

Of those, about 39.1 million will drive and 3.66 million will fly.

In New Jersey, more than 1 million residents are expected to travel during the holiday period.

That number is nearly unchanged from last year, despite higher costs.

AAA says travel is expected to be heaviest during peak hours between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., with additional congestion likely Friday evening.

Sunday is expected to have the lightest traffic.
