Beachgoers were prohibited from swimming Saturday because of a strong rip tide caused by Hurricane Bill.
Lifeguards in Belmar say they had to brave the current to pull several people to safety before making the waves off-limits to swimmers. Surfers were given the green light for a portion of the day, and many say the waves were the biggest they've rode this season.
Lifeguards say the rip tide is expected to remain strong for most of the weekend. Police say anyone seen going in the water after beaches close at 5 p.m. will be penalized.
