Long Beach collection:
The City of Long Beach, which suffered similar devastation after Superstorm Sandy in 2012, has established a donation center for the next two weeks to collect items. Long Beach Councilman Scott J. Mandel launched the effort and the Long Beach Auxiliary Police Department & City of Long Beach Fire Department will be accepting donations for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Residents of the Third Congressional District can drop off items at Suozzi's Huntington and Queens offices to be delivered to Long Beach and included in the packages that will be sent to Texas.

To connect to national organizations seeking volunteers:  National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD):  http://www.nvoad.org.  Member organizations have posted their volunteer criteria.
 
While cash is definitely preferred, see information on items that are now being collected and how those should be directed.  These include:

Trusted World's Donation Center - Mail items to Trusted World's donation center at 15660 North Dallas Parkway, Dallas, through Sept. 1. Items needed include:
-toiletries, 
-feminine hygiene products
-diapers
-baby food 
-baby wipes and 
-nonperishable food
-The only clothing items that are needed at this time are packs of underwear and socks
