Coastal communities, including some at the Jersey Shore, are using coconuts to protect the shoreline.
Strands of coconut husk, also known as coir, are being used as a barrier to reduce wave energy - ultimately shielding the shoreline. The coir is made from coconut fibers. Shells are spun into mats or logs held together by netting.
Coir is seen as a new cost-effective solution to aid in reducing shoreline erosion.
