The Lumberville-Raven Rock pedestrian bridge, a 1947 suspension span built by the company behind the Brooklyn Bridge, will undergo more than $3.2 million in lighting and security upgrades under a contract approved Monday by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission.

The commission awarded a contract worth up to about $3.2 million to PKF-Mark III Inc. of Newtown, Pennsylvania, for the project on the toll-supported pedestrian bridge linking the Raven Rock section of Delaware Township, New Jersey, with the Lumberville section of Solebury Township, Pennsylvania.

Built by the John A. Roebling's Sons Company, which also produced the cables used in the Golden Gate Bridge, the bridge will receive color-programmable LED architectural lighting, security cameras and other improvements. The commission said the cameras will allow around-the-clock monitoring of the bridge and nearby sections of the Delaware River, helping officials respond more quickly to emergencies such as capsized boats, suicide attempts and other incidents. The bridge is the only structure in the commission's transportation network without remote monitoring capability.

The project also includes new energy-efficient LED lighting for the bridge's towers, walkway and stone substructures.

Later this year, the commission plans to assume responsibility for displaying and maintaining the American flag that has hung from the bridge since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The tradition was started by the late William E. Tinsman, who died in 2023. Officials said the flag will remain about the same size and continue to hang in its current vertical orientation.

Field preparation is expected to begin later this summer, with some work continuing into 2027. The commission said the bridge is expected to remain open during construction, with pedestrians routed around active work areas.
