Heavy winds cause tree branch to strike car leading to death of Scotch Plains resident

Scotch Plains police are investigating a deadly weather-related single-car crash.

Officials say that at approximately 8:08 p.m. Friday, 41-year-old Jared C. Hirschowitz, of Scotch Plains, was traveling eastbound on Raritan Road when an intense storm caused a tree limb to strike the vehicle's hood, sending it off the roadway.

The vehicle then struck a bush and a tree before coming to a rest along 2150 Raritan Rd.

Hirschowitz, the driver of the vehicle, died from the impact of the accident. The passenger of the vehicle was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

The collision remains under active investigation by the Scotch Plains Police Department, the Union County Crash Team, and the Union County Medical Examiner’s Office.
