Cleanup efforts continued across Central and North Jersey after powerful storms swept through the region Friday and continued Saturday night.

The severe weather brought down trees, knocked out power and left one person dead in Scotch Plains, according to Mayor Joshua Losardo.

The circumstances surrounding the death were not immediately clear.

"It was terrifying," said Scotch Plains resident Pat Klein. "Ten minutes, and it was almost the same impact [Superstorm] Sandy had."

High winds brought down a tree across an entire residential street next to Klein's home.

"We were lucky it didn't hit our house," she said.

However, some weren't so fortunate.

A tree fell directly on a car and a home in Passaic.

"Out of nowhere, I looked to the right and saw sparks coming from the cables," said Victoria Gonzalez. "Then I saw the trees, the branches fall right on top."

Damaged power lines also left thousands of customers without electricity during one of the hottest days of the summer.

"We're lucky we have a generator, but it's really not keeping up with the heat," Klein said.

With another round of storms Saturday night, some residents told News 12 they were worried about the potential for more damage.

"It was really close to our house. I was scared for her, for us, for everybody in the neighborhood," Gonzalez said about Friday night's incident.

The circumstances surrounding the death are unclear.
