A state grand jury has indicted 14 corrections officers who were facing charges related to a January 2021 incident at the Edna Mahan Correctional Faculty for Women, according to the
New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.
Authorities say that during the incident, inmates were forcibly removed from their cells. They say some inmates were beaten.
One inmate was allegedly punched almost 30 times by an officer during extraction.
Another was covered in blood, and her right eye became swollen shut.
This occurred during the overnight hours of Jan. 11 and Jan 12, 2021, amid “escalating tensions after several incidents of inmates squirting unknown liquids through their cell doors, striking officers.”
The incident follows years of complaints from inmates about sexual and physical abuse.
The 14 officers were charged with conspiracy, official misconduct, tampering with public records and aggravated assault.
The facility is slated to be closed.
