Schools across New Jersey are still trying to find ways to protect their students and staff from threats.
A school in Gloucester City is using bulletproof shields as one way to thwart a gunman.
News 12 New Jersey was given a demonstration on Wednesday to see how durable the shields are. Police officers first shot a shield with rounds from a 45-caliber handgun, and then followed up with rifle rounds from a Colt M4 Commando. A closer look at the steel surface of the 2 feet by 2 feet shield showed there wasn't even a dent.
Gloucester City will have 250 of these shields placed inside of the city’s three schools.
"Basically, it's another way to keep our kids our teachers safe,” says Gloucester City Police Chief Brian Morrell.
The demonstration took place on the 10th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty students and six staffers were killed in that shooting.
"In those 10 years these incidents have not stopped. Will they ever stop? Probably not but this is another way to keep our kids safe,” Morrell says.
Morrell has started showing teachers how to use the shields. One of them is teacher Kevin Young.
"We are all familiar with what could happen. The world has changed a lot in the last however many years. Gotta be ready,” says Young.
The shields will be placed wherever there is a fire extinguisher. The shields weigh 22 pounds. The high school will get 36 shields. Every school in the district will have schools by January.
These shields are made by Hardwire, a Maryland company. Each cost $300. They're being donated to the school district by Leo Holt, of Holt Logistics. The business operates out of Gloucester Marine Terminal.
"It's about the fact that we need to provide more layers of protection for the children in our schools throughout the United States,” says Holt.
Holt Logistics has been in Gloucester since 1926. The company says it wants to give back, and in this case, the family-owned business is providing a line of defense for the families, children and teachers of the community.
