Funding runs out today for the Gateway Tunnel Project unless $15 billion is released by the president and the Transportation Department.
The Gateway Tunnel Project is the nation's largest infrastructure project and construction has been ongoing for 27 months at five different sites.
Workers with Laborers' Union Local 731 were seen shutting down equipment in New York on Thursday.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer joined News 12 today to discuss expectations for the court hearing, what President Trump wanted to release the funding, how potential delays could affect the project, and why the Gateway Project is considered important.
The commission overseeing the Gateway Tunnel Project has filed a lawsuit claiming breach of contract in an effort to have the funding released.
About 1,000 workers could lose their jobs if the project is not funded. "It would be a real shame to have to close these gates and lay these booms down on these cranes and send all of our guys home," said Giulio Petroni of Local 731.
A federal judge in the Southern District of New York will consider a lawsuit filed by the governors of New Jersey and New York.
The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order that would allow the tunnel project to continue being funded.
A press conference is scheduled later this morning with Gov. Sherrill, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, state representatives and union members.
