"Game of Thrones" fans, get ready.
HBO announced Sunday night that the eighth and final season will begin on April 14. In a one minute and 44 second teaser released Sunday, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) are seen in the crypts of Winterfell.
Fans have eagerly awaited the six-episode finale of the show since Season 7 of the popular HBO show ended in August 2017.
The fantasy series, based on New Jersey native George R.R. Martin’s novels, has been one of HBO's most successful shows.
Martin, who is from Bayonne, says that he partially got the idea for the novels based off his pet turtles when he was younger.
"They were killing each other to determine who would be the turtle king,” he said during one interview.
Another New Jersey connection to the series is actor Peter Dinklage who plays Tyrion Lannister. Dinklage was born in Morristown and then spent his childhood in Brookside.
Martin and Dinklage are both New Jersey Hall of Fame nominees.
The final season of “Game of Thrones” will only contain six episodes and will wrap on May 19. But a prequel created by Martin and writer-producer Jane Goldman is underway, with Naomi Watts set to star, and other spinoffs are possible.
