Commuters traveling between South Amboy and Manhattan are now boarding from a brand-new ferry terminal along Raritan Bay.
Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new permanent terminal Tuesday. The South Amboy ferry, operated by New York Waterway, has served commuters in Monmouth and Middlesex counties since 2023.
Passengers had been using a temporary floating dock while construction was underway.
The project cost $31 million and marks the completion of work that began years ago.
Mayor Fred Henry said ridership continues to climb.
"Right now it's about 11,000 a month that are using the ferry. And from what the operators are telling me, they are very, very pleased with the ridership and how it has increased."
Henry said the new parking lot has also helped attract commuters. He noted the project dates back to 1998.
