A Lakewood man wanted in Israel on charges related to sex crimes against children has been arrested by federal agents in New Jersey, authorities said.

Yechiel Yehoshua Farkash, 43, was taken into federal custody without incident in Lakewood by Homeland Security and members of the U.S. Marshals, according to Homeland Security Investigations Newark.

Authorities said Israeli officials are seeking to prosecute Farkash for attempted rape and indecent acts involving children based on alleged acts committed in Israel beginning in 2020.

According to federal officials, Israel requested Farkash’s provisional arrest under the U.S.-Israel extradition treaty. The US Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey then obtained a provisional arrest warrant in U.S. District Court in New Jersey.

The extradition matter is being handled by federal prosecutors in New Jersey and the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, according to the U.S. Marshals.
