Fire officials say the massive fire that engulfed two buildings in North Bergen Thursday started in a basement dryer.
The fire broke out in a building on Meadowview Avenue and quickly spread to a neighboring building. Investigators say neither of the structures can be salvaged.
The owner of one of the buildings, Felix Marrero, says he came to America 40 years ago and eventually saved enough money to turn the building into apartments.
?You see something you?ve worked for go down so fast,? Marrero said. ?But besides that, I thank God that nobody was hurt, nobody was burnt, there was no fatality.?
Marrero says he is more concerned about his tenants. One tenant, an elderly woman, is now staying with relatives. The other tenants, a Hindu couple, are currently on a one-month long trip to India.
Marrero has promised his tenants he will rebuild.
Meanwhile, authorities say a third building had smoke and water damage, but was not burned in the fire.
