A fire at Madison Arms Apartments in Old Bridge injured six people and killed at least seven cats, according to emergency officials.
First responders were called to the scene around 9:20 p.m. on Monday.
Five people were hospitalized, with no word on their conditions, and one police officer was treated for smoke inhalation and released.
One resident told News 12, “It was bad. It spread quick. I heard screaming from the tenants who live on the first floor, nice people, all of them are nice people, and the flames were shooting out.”
The Red Cross says they expect to be assisting approximately 18 people from the 10 units that have been affected by the fire.
The cause remains unknown.
