Firefighters responded to a single-family home in flames in Howell overnight.

The fire destroyed a home on Paceview Drive just off Gristmill Road just after 3 a.m. Those inside, believed to be a family of at least three, were able to get out safely.

Fire officials say the residence sustained significant damage and firefighters needed an excavator so crews could get to flames under the partially collapsed structure.

Heavy equipment was brought in around 6:30 a.m. to bring down what was left standing after the fire was controlled.

The neighbors’ house also suffered some damage including melted vinyl siding.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants.
