A fire destroyed a Hackensack furniture store Wednesday.

The fire inside the Buy and Save 2 furniture store on Main Street started around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday while employees were inside. Those employees called the fire department after noticing smoke.

Hackensack fire officials say the roof collapsed a few hours after flames broke out on the first floor.

Officials say that the strong winds in the area, coupled with the old age of the building, made fighting the fire difficult for crews.

Hackensack Fire Chief Tom Freeman also said that the fire was fueled by the combustible mattress and furniture inside the store. No injuries were reported.

About 10 fire departments from surrounding towns were called in to assist the Hackensack Fire Department.

The building has been deemed a total loss and will be demolished.

Main Street was closed in the area for a time while crews fought the fire.
