A fire destroyed an abandoned house and spread to two others along Washington Avenue in Irvington early Wednesday.
Fire officials say the fire broke out just before 8 a.m., reducing the vacant structure—known locally for squatters—to a mound of charred wood.
A man walking his dog spotted the flames and called 911. The fire then engulfed a single-family home to the right, leaving its side exposed and roof heavily damaged. A multifamily home to the left sustained minor siding damage.
Takiyah Diamond, a first-floor resident of the multifamily home, escaped with her dog after someone pounded on her door. “A lot of times squatters will come in and out,” she said. “There’s nothing in there, literally it’s all wood. It wasn’t really boarded up because the person who owns it was going to restructure the home.”
No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
