The man suspected of killing his 2-year-old daughter by tossing her in a creek in Wall Township has been captured in California and is facing extradition.
The U.S. Marshal's Office confirmed that Arthur Morgan III was arrested yesterday after an intense eight-day manhunt. Forty members of the Fugitive Task Force and U.S. Marshal Service found Morgan smoking a cigarette on the back porch of a home in East San Diego after a confidential tip revealed his location, officials say.
He's charged with murdering his daughter, Tierra Morgan-Glover, on Nov. 21. Her body was found partially submerged, still strapped in her car seat in a creek in Shark River Park.
Prosecutors are expected to move quickly to extradite 27-year-old Morgan. A trial date has been set for tomorrow.
News 12 New Jersey learned yesterday that Tierra's mother, Imani Benton, had been trying to get an order of protection against Morgan. She had told the state's Division oDf Youth and Family Services (DYFS) that Morgan had been abusive toward her and her daughter. She says now that Morgan has been captured, her daughter hasn't died in vain.
Benton also told News 12 New Jersey that it was very hard to get help when she left Tierra's father. DYFS confirmed that they had contact with the family four times within the past 13 months. A court had determined there wasn?t enough proof of domestic violence for Benton to receive a permanent restraining order against Morgan.
Benton and her family say they hope that someone can benefit from their misfortune.
